Extra points for those of you old enough to get the reference... (see here)
I think I mentioned it before, this past weekend we spent a lot of family time together. We love family time!
Saturday late afternoon, I had the plan to go to the Artomatic exhibit in Crystal City - all four of us. I wanted to go because I wanted to go and we also have a friend who is hosting a booth there and we wanted to support her .
So we packed up the car and headed out. I know this is getting old, but I really have no clue how to get anywhere fast or efficiently from the new place. And quite frankly our GPS sucks! It basically tells us to always use Connecticut Ave...
So we start off en route to Artomatic. An hour later, still in the car and the kids are getting restless and Jocelyn is ready to go home. I suggest, forget the Artomatic let's check out the new fountains in Georgetown (I remembered Not-So-SAHM's post on it - see here), But en route to attempting to get to the fountains in now Saturday night traffic in Georgetown we ended driving over the Key Bridge and visiting Virginia. By now, Vera was screaming her head off for dinner, Jonah was screaming are we there yet? and Jocelyn was giving me the evil eye... family time is awesome...
quick where is that damn kaleidoscope?
Jocelyn pulled over and I took the wheel. I kaleidoscoped up another idea... PLANES (another shout out to Not-So-SAHM here too, What can I say I love reading that blog!) ... we will go to Gravelly Point park and watch the planes. Gravelly Point park is right near National Airport and sits basically on the end of one of the run ways. If you hang out at the park, the planes take off right over your head! It is very very loud and very cool. It also sits right on the water and you can watch lots of little boats sailing/driving by. There is parking lot. They are a number of picnic tables. There is a huge open space for running around (although the grass needed some mowing!) in the grass, playing and just hanging out. Of course there is also an ice cream truck there too.
We needed provisions first. I meandered around Roslyn right on the other side of the Key Bridge. Found the Safeway. Bought picnic food. Score one for me.
Then found the airport. Score two.
Then drove back from said airport and found Gravelly Point park. Score Three!
We found a spot. We ate. We ran around. We looked at the boats. And we saw "da planes!" - instantly Vera was happily pointing at the planes and signing for more... Jonah was scared at first and snuggled with Mama, but by the time we were leaving he was totally into it!
They also got ice cream from the ice cream truck... Jonah picked a Spiderman pop for him and a Dora pop for Vera. They may have liked the ice cream pops more than the planes... I am not sure.
It turned into a good evening. The weather was perfect and after the almost two hour drive, we all needed a little bit of outside relaxing time.
When the planes are landing from the north to south they are literally right over your head.
