Oh Myo! It's Cinco de Mayo!

We celebrated Cinco de mayo a day early this year and had a Cinco de Mayo Shabbot.  Grandma was there to join in the Mexican Fiesta and to take over once Mama and me left on a jet plans to Vegas, baby  for approximately 48 hours (more on that later).  But before we left, we managed to fit in some red, white and green DIY fiesta ware for our Shabbot.  Jonah worked hard to finish the appropriate costumes and accessories for him and Vera while Vera slept.  And I worked equally hard to have a pretty fantastic fiesta Shabbot dinner ready.

Sombreros:  We reused the circle cardboard pieces you get when you buy Homemade Pizza Co. pizza for the brims.  You get two.  One for each kid.  I cut a hole in the middle for the circles (brims) and stuck through leftover DIY Flower Pots from Oriental Trading Company.  In each flower pot I put a piece of yellow tissue paper with each kid's name.  Jonah painted the brims yellow and then used cut up pieces of felt to decorate them.  Voila!  Sombreros.  (Inspired from Pinterest pins here and here)

Vests:  I cut up two paper bags - a small and medium one for each kid.  Jonah decorated them with green and red felt shapes.  Vera enjoyed wearing hers, Jonah did not...

Maracas:  We used two water bottles with cheerios in them.  Jonah pasted red, Green, and white tissue paper squares on them.  Both kids loved shaking them around.

We had this great salsa salmon (fresh wild salmon with Trader Joe's Pineapple Salsa on it- cook for 15 minutes at 400 degrees- YUMMY!  A big salad.  Mexican rice.  Chips and salsa, guacamole, and queso.  For dessert I made sombrero sugar cookies (inspired by Pinterest here) except mine were sugar cookies, juicy fruit, icing and sprinkles.

Jonah liked our Cinco de Mayo book. We made up a Spanish counting song... it was fun and Jonah knows his numbers in Spanish up to 10 - and I didn't teach them to him?!?!  Guess Dora did...

Vera managed to wear her vest and shake her maraca, dance to our coutning song, eat up the salmon, rice and guacamole, & take about 6 steps on her own!  Grow, Know & Go Vera Go!

(PS: sorry for the late post, but it is only 12:30am here in Vegas... Vegas, baby...)
