Sugar & Spice!

that means Turkey Sugar Cookies and Pumpkin West Indian Spice Pie to us...

That is what we "created" on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  We are lucky to be able to "go" to a Thanksgiving feast and that means we don't have to cook, clean, or prepare for the big day.  This year we decided we'd bring some yummy treats to the feast at our family's house in Baltimore.

Jonah didn't have school on Wednesday so we had a baking and making day!  It was all very 1950s housewife style - as in we used premade, canned, and what we had in the kitchen stuff to make our delicacies!  It was also very "toddler" friendly & fun!

Turkey Sugar Cookies!
Store bought sugar cookie dough (2 packages - one for the kids, one for me to do and bring to the meal)
candy corns
m&ms
frosting (we had some pink left over)
We baked the premade store bought cookie  dough.  I frosted them.  I gave Jonah & Vera half the cookies to decorate and I did the other half.  We used candy corns and m&ms.   5 candy corns for the turkey feathers and one for the beak, 2 m&ms for the eyes...  Jonah & Vera loved this "activity" and ate way too many candy corns and m&ms!!!  I brought my half of the cookies to Thanksgiving on Thursday.  Jonah's & Vera's half - looked like impressionistic turkeys- we ate them and then gave the rest away!

Pumpkin West Indian Spice Pie
One can of pumpkin
One pie pan
One premade pie crust
2 eggs
One 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
1/4 tsp salt
Jamaican All Spice
West Indian Nutmeg
Pumpkin Pie Spice
Ground Ginger
I looked at a number of pumpkin pie recipes and sort of made this one up.  And it actually came out pretty good!  Jonah and Vera unrolled the pie crust and then put in into the pans.  Jonah emptied the pumpkin into the bowl and the can of condensed milk.  They each put one egg into the bowl.  Vera mixed it all up while Jonah added all the spices and salt.  Vera had a chance to add the spices too!  We didn't measure the spices - I just let them do it!  Then we poured it into the pie pans and baked for 50 minutes at 375 degrees (until you can stick a knife in it and it comes out clean).   When I turned away to put the pies in the oven - the kids did another self-initiated project.  I call it - Spice Art!  All of the spices were shaken out onto the table amid huge bursts of laughter from both Jonah & Vera!  For a moment I thought I would scream my head off at them - but they were so damn cute and happy!  Finally, my mindfulness training kicked in!  I joined them at the table and spent some time playing with the spices on the table.  Writing our names.  Smelling them.  And having a good time!  The spices were everywhere!!!!  On the table, on the floor, all over us!  So it turned out we had another whole project after we played with the spices - we had to clean up!  And we did.  Finally, the kitchen was clean and the pie was done.  We made 2 - one to bring and one to keep.  We had the pie for lunch with cool whip! DELICIOUS!
